The 20th Annual U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships Is Underway Stratton, VT (March 16, 2002) - The 2002 U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships, the premier snowboarding event of the season, is underway at Stratton Mountain, Vermont, and the top snowboarders in the world, including Winter Games medallists Ross Powers, Kelly Clark, Danny Kass, and JJ Thomas, have returned to Stratton's hallowed slopes to battle it out in the Quarterpipe, Halfpipe, and Slopestyle events, in the hopes of taking home the coveted U.S. Open championship crown, and a slice of the event's $180,000 total cash purse.

The highly anticipated Quarterpipe event was held under the lights on Friday night, March 15, 2002, and thousands of energized spectators turned out to witness the mind-blowing action first-hand. A monstrous, twenty-five foot tall Quarterpipe was erected to host the competition, and the riders were absolutely destroying it all night long. For the men, the United States' Travis Rice claimed top honors by throwing down huge straight airs and super technical spins. Fellow countryman, Keir Dillon, took home second place honors, and New Zealand's Dylan Butt rounded out the top three. With a deep bag of tricks including lofty 720's and smooth McTwists, Kelly Clark kept her golden streak alive with a well-deserved first place finish at last night's Women's Quarterpipe Final. New Hampshire's Jamie MacLeod took second, and Vermont's own, Hannah Teter, landed in third.

The U.S. Open Halfpipe competition, widely recognized as the greatest Halfpipe contest in the world, went down today, Saturday, March 16, 2002. Thousands of energized spectators were at Stratton to marvel at the amazing riding in the event's Superpipe, 300 feet in length with consistent fifteen-foot walls. For the men, it was the United States' Danny Kass, who, for the second straight year conquered the Superpipe and earned himself the top podium spot. Finland's Markku Koski found himself in second place at the end of the day by putting it all on the line and spinning like there was no tomorrow. Pennsylvania's Keir Dillon rounded out the top three.

On the women's front, Kelly Clark, who won last night's Women's Quarterpipe event, made it two for two as she once again found herself in the top podium spot at the close of the competition. Fellow countrywoman and long-time East coast ripper, Tricia Byrnes, nabbed second place honors, with Oslo, Norway's Stine Brun Kjeldaas finishing up in third.

Still to come at the 20th Annual U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships is the Boy's and Girl's Junior Jam Halfpipe competition, as well an entirely new event that has been added to this year's schedule - Men's and Women's Slopestyle. This heavily skateboard-influenced discipline is certain to be a crowd favorite as it combines multiple freestyle elements set within a unique course featuring a multitude of jumps, rails, and hips.

Both events will take place at Stratton on Sunday, March 17, 2002.
